The art of scagliola takes origins at about the end of the 16th century in the town of Carpi in north of Italy , first as a poor technical used only to makes work similar to the marble . In particolar way the scagliola was used to make something similar to the beautiful marbles of Florence called " Tarsie " or " Commessi fiorentini "with great success but less cost because the row material were chalk,coloured graves and glue.
During the 17th century the diffusion of the scagliola took place in the working middle class that could buy works of art with great pleasure even if made of something poor .
Born in origin for the imitation of the marble the technicals got always better and better thanks also to the capability of the materials with wich had been possible making designs and combination of colours more interesting and beautiful of the same realized in marble.
The schools that is possible to study were the Carpigiana from Carpi and the Intelvese from the place in the near of Como , the first one specialized in floreal designs, the second in geometrical ones.
With the 19th century and the industrial revolution this form of art began her decline and was used only for the walls coverig the bricks for giving a marble effect.

Since the end of the 2nd world war coming to our times the scagliola is almost missed for the principal reason of the hand work necessary and for the great capability of the artist in every part of the making .
Today very few people know this great form of art and ther are no books or schools about it.

It’s still a tradition learned from teacher to pupil.
Mr MARIO GUERCI, proprietor of the same firm follows the ancient technicals and performs himself all the work illustrated in the section by hand .
